Sciatica Causes

Sciatica Causes

Sciatica is a term used to describe a collection of specific symptoms that generally result from compression of the sciatic nerve in the lower spine. They are often slight, but they can be so severe that normal daily activities become impossible. These symptoms can also be the result of many different conditions, and in some cases can be caused by multiple conditions in conjunction with one another.

Some of the most common sciatica causes include:

  • Bone spur
  • Bulging disc
  • Ruptured or herniated disc
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Injury like a fractured pelvis
  • Spinal stenosis

Treating Sciatica Causes

Treatment for sciatica is usually composed of a combination of at-home techniques or lifestyle changes and doctor-prescribed, medical methods. Some of these include:

  • Rest
  • Stretching
  • Weight loss
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines
  • Spinal cortisone injections
  • Pain medications - OTC or prescription

If these treatments fail to bring relief, then surgery may be put forth as a final treatment option. For patients in this situation, there is an alternative to the open back surgery - endoscopic spine treatment. This procedure uses minimally invasive techniques to access and treat the afflicted area with less trauma to the body, resulting in a faster recovery time and an extremely high success rate.
