Diagnosing Sciatica
When you’re experiencing lower back pain, sciatica may be the cause. In diagnosing sciatica, your doctor will conduct a thorough interview and also a physical examination.
The issues your doctor will address include:
- How long you’ve experienced pain.
- Where the pain originated and where you feel it now.
- What type of pain you are experiencing (burning, tingling, numbing).
- The severity of the pain.
- What types of activities exacerbate the pain.
Diagnosing sciatica may also require medical imaging tests like a CT scan, MRI, or X-ray. Your doctor will use these images and the answers from your interview to determine if something is pressing on the sciatic nerve where it exits the spinal canal. One of the main indications that this is the case is pain that runs from the lower back, across the buttocks and down one leg. If this symptom is present, then diagnosing sciatica becomes much easier.
If it’s determined that you do have sciatica, there are a number of treatments your doctor may suggest. In severe cases, surgery may be required. If you find yourself in that scenario, you should consider endoscopic back surgery from Laser Spine Institute. It’s highly effective and comes with a smaller chance of risks than traditional back surgery.
