Radicular Pain May Be Treatable With a Procedure from Laser Spine Institute
Radicular pain, best described as the numb or tingling sensation that radiates from the back and travels down one leg, is commonly called sciatica. The pain is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, which originates at the spine in the lower back and travels down the leg. Generally, this compression is caused by a herniated disc, which is when the gel-like filling of one of the discs separating your vertebrae oozes out and presses on the sciatic nerve.
There are also some other causes for radicular pain, including:
- Spondylolisthesis: this is when one vertebra comes loose (usually caused by a fracture or worn out disc) and presses onto an adjacent vertebra, compressing the sciatic nerve in the process.
- Stenosis: when a disc, ligament, swollen joint or other tissue juts into sciatic nerve or another nerve and causes compression and pain.
- A traumatic accident: these events can force the spine out of alignment, causing vertebrae, discs or other body parts to rest on the sciatic nerve.
Fortunately, all of these radicular pain causes and more can be treated. A doctor will likely start addressing the discomfort with modest approaches like over-the-counter medications, physical therapy, stretching, or traction. If none of those treatments work, an epidural steroid injection may be given for temporary relief. But if the radicular pain is still severe after the injection wears off, surgery may be suggested. At Laser Spine Institute we perform several that are minimally invasive and highly effective. They are all performed endoscopically to reduce damage to tissue, and this allows LSI’s surgeons to perform their procedures in an outpatient setting.
