Living with Sciatica
Sciatica is a painful condition that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. While a doctor’s diagnosis and professional treatment plan is an integral part of any recovery, there are also a number of natural, at-home ways to alleviate the painful symptoms of the condition. Some of the most common methods include:
- Rest - Make sure that you not only get enough sleep, so that the body has a chance to recover and repair itself, but also that you take time to sit down and physically rest during an active day. Don’t push yourself until it hurts; be proactive and decide ahead of time how frequently you’ll take rests and for how long. For example, if you know that your symptoms will become unbearable after half an hour of nonstop activity, then make it a point to stop after twenty minutes for a five minute break. This can keep you moving longer overall and help you avoid exacerbating your symptoms.
- Stretch - Exercises that lengthen the spine and loosen the muscles can help alleviate the pressure on the sciatic nerve, thereby reducing the severity of symptoms.
- Work out - While some people may not be able to perform strenuous exercise, adding a daily walk to your routine can help drop excess body weight. Even just five pounds lost can reduce stress on your spine and in turn on the sciatic nerve. Weight training exercises that focus on the core can also help by increasing spinal stability.
- Follow your doctor’s orders - It can be easy to become lax when it comes to taking your medication or undergoing other treatments prescribed by your doctor if the symptoms aren’t flared up, but don’t be lulled into a sense of security. Make sure you follow your doctor’s orders, including prescribed rest periods and stretching.
