Sciatica and the Neck

Sciatica and the Neck

Sciatica is a term used to describe a group of symptoms that are the result of problems with the sciatic nerve. This nerve is the longest in the human body and it originates at the spine in the lower back. It extends into the buttocks, down the legs, and into the feet.

While most cases of sciatica are experienced in the lower body, it is very easy to confuse the symptoms of sciatica with those of neck conditions since they are similar in sensation. In fact, some of the conditions that cause sciatica can also be found in the neck and can include:

  • Bulging disc
  • Ruptured disc
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease

Treating Sciatica and Neck Conditions

Sciatica treatments are similar to many of those that are used to treat conditions affecting the neck, and many times the conservative treatment regimens used to treat both include a combination of:

  • Pain medicines - over the counter and prescription
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines
  • Stretching
  • Rest
  • Spinal decompression
  • Hot and cold compresses
  • More

Surgery can also be used to treat sciatica and neck conditions. However, it is saved for only the most severe cases in which the patient's quality of life remains negatively impacted by their condition despite treatment with these conservative methods.

For more information on sciatica or neck pain, as well as the procedures available to treat these issues, such as endoscopic spine surgery, contact Laser Spine Institute. Our doctors will provide you with a review of your MRI or CT scan free of charge to determine your eligibility for one of our procedures as well as discuss all of your potential treatment options with you.
