To give a sciatica diagnosis, a doctor must determine that a patient's symptoms are consistent with that of sciatic nerve compression, which is the cause of sciatica. These symptoms are experienced in the lower or lumbar spine and through the buttocks, backs of the legs, and/or into the soles of the feet.
These symptoms can include:
- Pain
- Numbness
- Pins and needles or a sensation of tingling
- Weakness in the legs
- Muscle spasms
- More
After the sciatica diagnosis is confirmed, then the doctor may move on to determine what condition or conditions are causing the irritation to the sciatic nerve. One or more of the following conditions can cause sciatica:
- Bulging disc
- Ruptured or herniated disc
- Spinal stenosis
- Facet joint disease
- Spinal arthritis
- Fractured pelvis
For most people, sciatica can be managed using a combination of conservative techniques like painkillers, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, rest, stretching, and more. However, those that cannot find enough relief to live a fulfilling life are forced to choose between suffering and surgery. For those that choose surgery, there is a safe, effective alternative to open back procedures known as endoscopic spine surgery. This procedure offers relief from sciatica due to bulging disc, herniated disc, and other conditions, without the downtime or many of the risks of open back surgery.
