Conservative Sciatica Treatment
Sciatica generally occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back all the way to the feet, becomes compressed. This pressure inhibits the nerve from functioning properly and can result in symptoms including pain, tingling, burning, muscle spasms and weakness, and much more. These are often mild to moderate in severity, but in some cases they can become debilitating and negatively impact a person's quality of life.
Sciatica treatment depends on the underlying cause of the condition. For example, sciatica that results from a bulging disc would require treatment specific to that issue, whereas sciatica that is caused by a bone spur would need a different type of treatment. However, there are some conservative methods that are common for treating sciatica no matter what the cause, including:
- Pain medications
- Rest
- Spinal decompression
- Stretching
- Weight loss
- Core strengthening exercises
Surgical Sciatica Treatment
For those patients whose symptoms are not significantly reduced by conservative sciatica treatment methods, surgery provides a final opportunity for relief. Surgical sciatica procedures include two options: open back surgery and a endoscopic procedure. Of the two, the latter procedure offers significant benefits, including:
- Shorter incision
- Use of local anesthesia and IV sedation rather than general anesthesia
- Outpatient setting (no hospital stay)
- Less chance of infection
- Higher success rate
- Faster recovery time
