Sciatica treatment depends on the condition or conditions that are causing the symptoms, and only a doctor who has personally examined you can provide an effective treatment plan. For example, someone who is experiencing sciatica due to a pelvis fracture or other traumatic injury is going to undergo a different treatment than someone suffering from a degenerative spine condition. However, there are many conservative treatment methods that are often recommended regardless of the cause.
These include:
- Rest
- Spinal cortisone injections
- Pain medications - OTC and prescription
- Anti-inflammatory medicines
- Exercise
- Stretching
- Spinal decompression therapy
- Hot/cold compression therapy
Surgical Sciatica Treatment
For the minority that cannot find relief from sciatica using the techniques listed above, surgery may be the final option. In this case, endoscopic spine surgery provides a safe, effective alternative to open back surgery. In fact, this procedure comes with many advantages over open back surgery, including:
- Shorter recovery time
- No general anesthesia - only local anesthesia and IV sedation
- Availability to some people who may not qualify for open back surgery
- Reduced trauma to the body
- Lowered chance of infection
- Performed as an outpatient rather than inpatient procedure, so no hospital stay
